Descrizione
The Lyon Neuroscience Research Center (CRNL) is a multidisciplinary research center founded in 2011, dedicated to the study of the brain from the molecular level up to cognitive functions and behavior. It brings together several hundred researchers, clinicians, and engineers, and combines fundamental and clinical research to better understand brain function and associated pathologies. The thesis will be carried out within the EDUWELL team of the CRNL. The PhD student will be affiliated with the Doctoral School of Neuroscience and Cognition (NSCo, ED 476). He or she will work in close collaboration with the clinical teams of the neonatology department of the Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant. Home Numeracy Environment and the Development of Mathematical Skills in Children Born Preterm Preterm birth is a well-established risk factor for learning difficulties, particularly in mathematics. In parallel, the home numeracy environment (the activities and interactions involving numbers within the household) is now recognized as a major early determinant of the development of numerical skills. It remains unknown, however, to what extent this environment differs in families of children born preterm, nor whether it can serve as a lever for intervention to support their mathematical development. This doctoral project, carried out within the PREMATH project (funded by the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale), aims to characterize the home numeracy environment and its role in the development of mathematical skills in children born preterm, compared with children born at term, from preschool (maternelle) to second grade (CE1). It draws on a cohort of approximately 160 families recruited through the neonatology department of the Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant in Lyon. The project combines several complementary methodological approaches: standardized cognitive assessments (TEDI-Math, BSEDS, NEMI-2), an electrophysiological measure of automatic numerical discrimination using portable EEG (fast periodic visual stimulation paradigm, FPVS), and a randomized controlled trial based on a parent-directed intervention aimed at enriching the home numeracy environment. More specifically, the project aims to: - characterize the home numeracy environment of children born preterm and compare it with that of children born at term; - measure the development of numerical skills at both the behavioral and neural levels; evaluate, through a randomized controlled trial, the effects of a parental intervention aimed at enriching this environment; - better understand the social and family determinants of these practices.
