This PhD project is part of a long-standing collaboration between the LOCEAN laboratory (UMR 7159) and the LJK laboratory (UMR 5224), which has already resulted in around twenty joint publications. The project will be jointly supervised by Gurvan Madec (LOCEAN, NEMO R&D team), Stephen Griffies (LOCEAN, NEMO R&D team), and Florian Lemarié (LJK, AIRSEA team). Stephen Griffies, who was awarded a Choose France fellowship, spent much of his career at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) and Princeton University. Together with Gurvan Madec, he is recognized as one of the leading international experts in theoretical and numerical ocean modelling. Florian Lemarié is an expert in the application of mathematics to ocean modelling. The PhD project will also be carried out in collaboration with Jérôme Chanut, the lead developer of the NEMO model's numerical core at Mercator Ocean International. The NEMO Research & Development team at LOCEAN investigates processes related to physical oceanography, sea ice, and biogeochemistry. Its research focuses on the interactions among these components, their coupling with the other components of the Earth system, and their influence on climate. The team also has extensive expertise in the development of numerical and statistical models. The Inria AIRSEA project team at LJK develops mathematical and numerical methods for geophysical flow modelling, uncertainty quantification, and high-performance computing. Its work relies on both deterministic and statistical approaches. The objective of this PhD project is to develop a new representation of the vertical coordinate in numerical ocean models used to simulate ocean currents, temperature, and salinity. These developments will improve the representation of deep-ocean circulation and internal mixing, as well as the realism of bottom boundary flows over complex ocean topography. From an applied perspective, the goal of this thesis is to integrate these developments into the NEMO ocean model, the reference ocean modeling framework in Europe, and to assess their impact in realistic configurations. Achieving this integration will require revisiting and refining the existing approaches on which the model is based. The benefits of the proposed methodology will be evaluated through both idealized test cases and realistic simulations, with results compared against available observations. Annuncio in inglese.
