Position Details Contract type: Fixed-term (CDD) Duration: 12 months Full-time: 100% Start date: 1 September 2026 (Flexible) Location: Centre d’économie de la Sorbonne, Maison des Sciences Économiques, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, 112 Bd de l’Hôpital, 75013 Paris Scientific supervisor: Clément Gorin Position Description About the employer: Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (UP1PS) structures its teaching and research around three major scientific areas: humanities and arts, law and political science, and economics and management. Research is conducted across 37 units, 24 of which are jointly supervised with CNRS and/or IRD. Several units, including the Centre d’économie de la Sorbonne (CES), receive funding through the Sorb’Rising project led by UP1PS (a France 2030 Excellence laureate), which supports transdisciplinary research at Paris 1. The GuerreIA project («Wars, Conflicts and Artificial Intelligence»), hosted at CES, is one of these transdisciplinary research initiatives. Work environment: The Centre d’Économie de la Sorbonne is a joint research unit (UMR 8174), established on 1 January 2006, under the principal supervision of CNRS and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, with secondary supervision by IRD (UA 993). Since 1 January 2024, CES has been directed by Stéphane Zuber. The lab is structured around three research themes (Interactions and Behaviours, Sustainable Globalisation, Institutions and Regulations), bringing together 94 researchers and faculty, 19 emeritus professors, and 120 doctoral students. The research engineer will be based at CES and work closely with the project’s scientific supervisor. Role: This position offers a strong opportunity to contribute to applied research at the intersection of economics and deep learning. It is research-intensive, requiring a high degree of autonomy and the ability to devise innovative solutions to complex problems. The successful candidate will contribute primarily to ongoing Sorb’Rising projects and will collaborate with a recently recruited research engineer. Responsibilities may evolve to reflect project developments and the candidate’s skills or interests. An appetite for academic research is desirable — this role is an excellent springboard towards a doctoral application at a leading institution. Responsibilities Research activities: Contribute to research projects in collaboration with the team. Conduct scientific literature reviews and produce syntheses. Develop data collection, processing, and analysis tools. Design, optimise, and evaluate deep learning models. Progressively supervise research assistants. Contribute to the writing of scientific articles and reports. Dissemination and outreach: Contribute to the organisation of scientific events. Disseminate project results through publications, communications, and reports. Coordinate and animate the project’s research network. Administrative and financial support: Coordinate the project’s human, technical, and financial resources. Ensure administrative and budgetary oversight of funded activities. Report to the funding body. Contribute to preparing and coordinating grant applications to support the research programme’s development. Candidate Profile Education and experience: Master’s degree in economics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or a related field. Prior experience in applied or academic research. Strong interest in social science questions. Technical skills: Solid understanding of deep learning methods applied to image and language data. Proficiency in Python or another object-oriented language (R, Julia). Proficiency in at least one deep learning framework (PyTorch, JAX). Proficiency in image processing and spatial data libraries (scikit-image, rasterio, GeoPandas). Ability to produce clean, readable, reproducible, and documented code. Experience with version control tools (Git). Soft skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Autonomy, rigour, and drive. Excellen Annuncio in inglese.
