Work Location BRINDISI Expected duration 6 MONTHS Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all peacekeeping and special political missions around the world as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies Funds and Programs. This Internship is located in the Technologies Infrastructure Support Unit (TISU) of the Infrastructure and Operations Section (IOS) within the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) at the UNGSC in Brindisi, Italy. TISU operates a twin data centre architecture across Brindisi, Italy, and Valencia, Spain, delivering resilient, highly available ICT services through geographically separated Tier III–Certified facilities. In addition, TISU is responsible for designing, maintenance, and implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) solution. The Intern reports to and works under the supervision of the Chief of TISU (or a designated officer). The internship is for six (6) months. Two (2) posts are available. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Our Interns work as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in UNGSC, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. The intern will support the Internet of Things team. Tasks will include: a) Assisting with daily operational checks and routine maintenance of the IoT platform, including monitoring server health, performing software updates, and verifying the status of databases, gateways, and other backend components. b) Assisting with lab testing, validation activities, platform deployment, and performance evaluations for new IoT research projects, with a particular focus on opensource IoT frameworks. c) Assisting with PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) configuration, maintenance, and support, including basic troubleshooting, updating logic routines, and supporting integration with IoT systems. d) Supporting the development and maintenance of IoT documentation, including architecture overviews, connectivity diagrams, sensor configuration guides, platform maintenance guidelines, and device inventory records. e) Assisting with the installation, integration, and configuration of IoT sensors. f) Assist with the research, testing, and evaluation of new sensors and technologies to expand the current capabilities. g) Supporting troubleshooting activities, including connectivity testing. h) Assisting with any other tasks assigned by the designated official. Qualifications/special skills The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). The field of study must be closely related to the internship’s technical scope, such as Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, or other relevant engineering or ICT disciplines. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor’s or equivalent), or enrolled in/completed with a Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Applicants must have a good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Exposure to Linux/Windows basics, networking, virtualization, monitoring systems, cabling or electrical systems is desirable. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
