18 Months Fixed Term, Whole-time Post Please note that the successful candidate can be hired either as a Post-Doctoral Researcher or a Research Assistant, based on their qualifications and level of experience. Applications are invited for researcher to work with UCC’s Offshore Renewable Energy Research Group on FLOW-COST: Floating Offshore Wind Cost-Informed Site Selection, an 18-month project funded under the SEAI National Energy Research, Development & Demonstration (RD&D) Programme. It is led by University College Cork with partners Exceedence Ltd and Wind Energy Ireland, and with Flotation Energy, Simply Blue Group, ESB and the Marine Renewables Industry Association as collaborators. Ireland has a government target of 37 GW of offshore renewable energy by 2050, of which roughly half must come from floating offshore wind (FLOW) in deeper Atlantic and Celtic Sea waters. These are among the most energetic waters in which FLOW has been contemplated. Wave conditions frequently exceed the operating limits of installation and service vessels, so developers face long waits for weather windows, extended downtime and significant unplanned cost. Existing published estimates of the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) for Irish waters do not account for this. FLOW-COST will produce the first open-access, weather-resolved mapping of FLOW costs in Irish waters, alongside GIS layers for site accessibility, annual energy production and visual sensitivity, a web-based LCOE calculator, and a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methodology for comparing candidate demonstrator sites. The project directly supports Action 3 and Action 8 of the Future Framework for Offshore Renewable Energy and Action 26 of Powering Prosperity, and is timed to inform the National Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP). The project comprises five work packages: WP1 Project Management, WP2 Cost of FLOW, WP3 GIS Development, WP4 MCDA, and WP5 Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation. This position leads UCC’s contribution to WP2 (Cost of FLOW) and involves the weather resolved-logistics modelling that feeds the LCOE calculations. The UCC logistics models simulate installation, operation and maintenance, and decommissioning task by task against hourly wind and wave time series spanning the project lifetime, with Monte Carlo simulation over weather years and component time-to-failure. The models are currently implemented in MATLAB with an Excel interface. Training in their use will be provided by Dr Frances Judge and Dr Fiona Devoy McAuliffe, both of whom have long track records in logistics and financial modelling of offshore wind.
