The Department of Management, Society and Communication invites applications for a PhD position in Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Business Scaling, with an empirical focus on defense, security and intelligence organizations at the Department of Management, Society and Communication (MSC). The expected start date is 1 February 2027. MSC carries out multidisciplinary research on the relationship between business and society. Its faculty explore the conditions and practices of responsible management, organisation and governance in a globalising world, sharing a particular concern with culture, communication and context as lenses to understand the interaction and interdependencies of business and society. MSC’s contribution to the study of responsible business and governance is organised around various research environments. Further information on the department is available here: https://www.cbs.dk/research/departments/department-management-society-and-communication Defense, security and intelligence organizations are facing tremendous change, driven by a confluence of geopolitical shifts, European re-armament, dramatic shifts in kinetic and hybrid warfare, and rapid technological evolution. An established defense industry actors are confronted with demands for rapid learning, rapid development, and rapid scale-up, for accommodating new technologies and new battlefield economics. New industry entrants are identifying and responding to new operational and technological opportunities in markets defined by high uncertainty and rapidly evolving demand. This brings to the fore questions of innovation, entrepreneurship and business scaling that matter not just to management research, but to society, and it is the context that the present PhD should explore. The PhD application should reflect an independently formulated research project that addresses questions about innovation, entrepreneurship and/or business scaling as they relate to the specific context of defense, security, and intelligence organizations. We would be interested in projects that engage with questions around, for instance and not limited to, the processes of developing innovations within these particular empirical contexts, the interplay between organizational and technological development, organizational utilization of rapidly evolving technologies, innovation collaboration across organizational boundaries, and organizational transformation spurred on by innovation and entrepreneurship. The PhD will be hosted in the department’s Technology & Society research cluster. This cluster constitutes a strong and growing research environment focused on the relationships between technology, society and organization and management. Researchers in the group study how innovation and technology shape organizations and society, and how organizational and institutional arrangements give rise to particular kinds of innovation and entrepreneurial behavior. Applications will be assessed on scientific merit and practical feasibility. The particular empirical context that we expect applicants to address can be challenging to both access, observe and report on. Applications should address these questions directly as part of their project description.
