Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time funded PhD scholarship starting in October 2026 affiliated to the [ CMNHS/ School of Medicine / Discipline of Pathology / LAMBE Institute ] at the University of Galway. University of Galway Located in the vibrant cultural city of Galway in the west of Ireland, the University of Galway has a distinguished reputation for teaching and research excellence For information on moving to Ireland please see www.euraxess.ie Detailed Project Description: Endocrine therapy (ET), including tamoxifen, letrozole and fulvestrant, is central to the treatment of ER-positive Breast Cancer and has significantly reduced recurrence and mortality. However, despite initial clinical benefit, up to 40% of patients develop endocrine resistance, leading to relapse and disease progression. We hypothesise that adaptive UPR activation promotes endocrine resistance in ER-positive breast cancer by sustaining ER-dependent and ER-independent survival signalling; and modulation of key UPR pathways mediators will restore sensitivity to endocrine therapy. This 4-year funded PhD project will investigate UPR regulated genes as a novel regulator of endocrine resistance in ER-positive breast cancer and potential therapeutic target for improved outcomes. Living allowance (Stipend): €25,000 per annum, [tax-exempt scholarship award] University fees : €5,750 (covered by scholarship) Start date : Autumn 2026 Academic Entry Requirements: We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and ambitious applicant with curiosity and passion for science.
