With this research position, you will have the opportunity to advance scientific expertise on integrated modelling of the entire water cycle, with particular focus on real-time simulations and operational forecasting. A key element is the development of hybrid models that combine our integrated national model of Denmark with AI-based methods to improve predictions of floods and droughts. We seek to enhance our ability to predict both groundwater and surface water conditions in an integrated way, reflecting the strong interconnections between these systems in Denmark. This understanding needs to be translated into operational flood forecasting, monitoring and climate adaptation tools. The position is for four years, starting November 1, 2026. The work location is GEUS in Copenhagen. Job description As a researcher at Department of Hydrology at GEUS, you will setup and apply integrated hydrological models that include both groundwater and surface water systems and develop hybrid models that combine our National Hydrological Model of Denmark with AI based methods. You will have particular focus on the development and operation of real-time simulations and forecasting, and a central responsibility of the position is to maintain and develop the operational system around the National Hydrological Model for real-time data generation as well as integrating new data sources such as remote sensing. A central aspect of the role is to translate scientific insights into operational tools that support flood forecasting, hydrological monitoring, and climate adaptation planning. You will support ongoing projects in real-time modelling and monitoring, flood forecasting, and national hydrological modelling, while contributing to a longer-term research profile in digital hydrological systems, climate change impacts on the hydrological cycle, large-scale data integration, and AI-based approaches in groundwater and surface water. We expect you to strengthen our collaboration with universities, agencies and international research partners, and contribute to joint scientific publications and funding applications. You will be part of both larger and smaller projects led by GEUS or some of our collaborators and you can expect to work in teams with colleagues. Your qualifications You are expected to have a Ph.D. in hydrology and have documented experience with numerical integrated hydrological modelling including groundwater, remote sensing, AI-based methods and data-driven hydrological models, as well as experience in operationalising real-time hydrological systems and programming in, for example, Python. In addition, you are expected to be proactive in documenting your research through the publication of peer-reviewed scientific articles, the participation in international conferences and to actively develop your research profile, particularly by contributing to the acquisition of external funding. Personal competencies include being structured, independent, responsible, proactive, and inquisitive in a research context, as well as the ability to embrace a broad range of activities and to collaborate on a daily basis with a team of colleagues at GEUS and contribute positively to teamwork. You must be able to communicate in English, and since the primary language of the organisation is Danish, you should be prepared to learn Danish. Department of Hydrology You will be part of the Department of Hydrology. The department works with characterization, monitoring, modeling and management of the freshwater cycle and substance transport in Danish and international contexts. Within current issues, the department contributes with research, advice and capacity building within: Integrated understanding and quantification of the flow of fresh water in the water cycle, including the interaction between groundwater and surface water (e.g. groundwater close to the ground, streams, lakes, drinking water reservoirs); Substance transport in the underground in connection
