The University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Theology invites applications for the position of Professor of Systematic Theology (W3) to be appointed by 1 October 2027. We are looking for a recognised scholar who is able to represent the full scope of teaching and research in the field of systematic theology. Candidates should have a specialisation in either dogmatics, ethics, or the philosophy of religion. The professor’s tasks include teaching in the degree courses provided at the Faculty of Theology (Magister Theologiae, Church Examination, Master of Theological Studies, teacher education). Candidates are expected to have achieved excellence in their research and be able to demonstrate teaching experience and an interdisciplinary profile in theology. Documented international collaboration activities, the willingness to take on roles in academic self-government and experience of such responsibilities, as well as experience in the acquisition of external research funding are desirable. The University supports and demands family-friendly leadership. The job requirements are defined in § 58(1) of the Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG M-V (State Higher Education Act): a university degree, teaching aptitude and academic excellence, which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree, as well as further academic achievements, which, in accordance with § 58(2) LHG M-V, are usually proven by a junior professorship, habilitation, or equivalent academic achievements in the field of systematic theology. Furthermore, the appointment of a full-time university professor at a faculty of protestant theology requires the consent of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany with regard to the teaching and confession of the person to be employed (in accordance with Article 4(2) of the Treaty between the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg and the Pomeranian Evangelical Church of 20 January 1994 [Güstrow Treaty]). Membership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church or of a church affiliated with the Lutheran churches is therefore a prerequisite for appointment to the professorship. In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the professor appointed will be assigned the status of a civil servant with unlimited tenure ( Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit ); alternatively, if the applicant is not permanently available: limited tenure as a civil servant or public service employee. As a general rule, permanent tenure as a civil servant can only be awarded for the first time to persons who have not yet ended their 50th year of life when they enter employment. This advertisement is directed at all persons, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. Thus, applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable. Women are specifically encouraged to apply for this position. Severely disabled applicants and persons granted equal status with a severely disabled person under German law with the same professional and personal qualifications will also be given preference. The State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will not reimburse application and interview expenses.
