Postdoc in Oceanography (m/f/d/x) AWI - Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven, Germany Background The AWI-LMU joint research group for Southern Ocean-Climate Interactions (SO-CLIM) invites applications for the position of a Postdoc in Oceanography in the framework of the EU project VERTical EXchange in the Southern Ocean ( VERTEXSO ). You will develop and implement novel parameterizations of subgrid-scale convective processes in an Earth System Model and investigate their role in Southern Ocean dynamics and global climate change. The overall objective of VERTEXSO is to advance our understanding of vertical exchange processes in the Southern Ocean and to assess their impact on global climatic changes. In particular, the project aims to assess the role of convection in the vertical exchange of climate-relevant tracers such as carbon and heat between the surface and deep ocean in the seasonally sea-ice covered Southern Ocean. Your Tasks You will contribute to the development of a subgrid-scale convection parameterization suitable for implementation in future CMIP-class Earth System Models, with the long-term goal of improving climate projections used to inform IPCC assessments and climate policy. As part of this project, you will have the opportunity to: develop and implement novel parameterizations of subgrid-scale convective plumes and supercooled seawater formation in the AWI Earth System Model, building on observational constraints and high-resolution model simulations; revealing the impact of plumes in the Southern Ocean model biases and historical trends to improve the models’ ability to reproduce the observed historical trend; validate model performance against observational datasets and contribute to reducing long-standing Southern Ocean biases in climate models; investigate the impact of convective plumes, stratification and sea ice on the transient climate response to increasing CO2, and on warm and cold climatic states; contribute to the development of improved process representations for next-generation Earth System Models and future CMIP simulations. Your Profile A PhD degree in environmental-, climate- or geosciences or a related field (applications of candidates that are about to complete their PhD will also be considered); Strong programming skills; A competitive publication record through first-author publications; Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an interdisciplinary international research team; Very good command of English (approximately equivalent to CEFR level C1). Preferred Qualifications and Skills Experiences in numerical modeling, advanced data analysis, and physical oceanography; Experience working with Earth System Models or ocean circulation models.
