Job description: PhD position in "sustainable use of the Arctic marine environment" (d/x/f/m) Background Arctic communities rely on sea ice for their way of life: commuting, hunting, fishing, trapping, and other traditional activities. Since 1979, Arctic sea ice extent has declined by about 40% in summer and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts that, by 2050, the Arctic Ocean will be completely sea ice free. As the Arctic warms, multi-year ice (MYI) is disappearing and leaving behind more first-year ice (FYI) and melt ponds. Satellite remote sensing provides key observations of the Arctic sea ice area, thickness and snow cover, but challenges remain in a changing Arctic. Given that the European Space Agency (ESA) will be launching several new satellites designed in part to improve monitoring of sea ice conditions, there is the opportunity to develop more robust and higher-resolution data products useful for Arctic communities. This PhD project falls within an international effort to co-develop shared Arctic variables of interest to local communities, assess their variability and future changes. Your Tasks This doctoral program focuses on sustainable use of the Arctic Marine Environment through: Development of shared Arctic variables (SAVs) of interest to local communities Assessments of variability in SAVs Future projections of SAVs using CMIP7 model output This will require you to work with indigenous communities and project partners to develop SAVs and participate in field work opportunities using AWI’s new fully polarimetric KuKa drone system.
