CALL FOR APPLICATIONS (Call ID: 93/2026) Posts of Part-Time Research Support Officer I or Research Support Assistant (Field Surveying and 3D Mapping) Project MAiPEX – “Malta AI Platform for Point-cloud Classification and Vector Extraction” Funded through the Technical Development Programme LITE 2025 (TDP-Lite) by Xjenza Malta And any other projects undertaken by the Department of Criminology, Faculty for Social Wellbeing. Applications are invited for a number of Research Support Officers(RSOs) or Research Support Assistants (RSAs) to carry out duties in relation to the MAiPEX Project which is funded by the Xjenza Malta via Technical Development Programme LITE 2025 (TDP-Lite) grant, and in which the University of Malta is a partner. The RSOs/RSAs may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Criminology within the Faculty for Social Wellbeing. The primary role will involve supporting field-based 3D data acquisition campaigns across Malta, including mobile LiDAR scanning, photogrammetric surveys, and associated data management activities. Applicants must: Be in possession of a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geomatics, Earth Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Architecture, Criminology, ICT, Digital Arts, or another relevant field; Demonstrate an interest in 3D spatial technologies, including LiDAR, photogrammetry, GIS, digital twins, or artificial intelligence applications; Be willing and able to participate in fieldwork activities across Malta; Possess good organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills; Be able to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment. The call is also open for third year students of the above-mentioned degrees. If successful, they will be initially employed as Research Support Assistants. The following will be considered an asset but are not essential: Familiarity with LiDAR and photogrammetric data acquisition techniques; Experience with GIS software and spatial data formats (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS, shapefiles, GeoJSON, LAS/LAZ); Previous experience in field surveying, geospatial data collection, or research projects. The posts are for a period until 31st March 2027 and will entail 15 hours of work per week, or according to the availability of the successful candidates. There will be the possibility of increasing the number of hours subject to the availability of funds and exigencies of the project. The initial remuneration per hour (inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustment) shall be €13.08 (RSO I) or €9.02 (RSA). Further Information MAiPEX will advance an existing AI model that classifies urban features from local LiDAR data and enables vector extraction of building footprints. MAiPEX will deploy a beta version of a public geospatial analysis platform with expanding vector extraction capabilities, including powerline networks and road maps. By automating the processing of national 3D scans with algorithms tailored to Malta's unique terrain and urban characteristics, MAiPEX eliminates time-consuming manual surveying and delivers accurate, timely insights to planners, researchers, and government bodies.
