GRANT DESCRIPTION Type of grant: Research Grant (BI) General scientific area: ENGINEERING Scientific subarea: Industrial engineering Grant duration: 6 months, starting on 2026-09-01 , with the possibility of being renewed until the end of the project. OBJECTIVES: Traditional dropout prediction models tend to underperform precisely in those educational settings where public intervention is most critical: university programmes with small student cohorts and limited historical data. This thesis evaluates the use of advanced machine learning methods, as a policy-support tool for early dropout detection in higher education. Beyond predictive accuracy, the methods must provide interpretable outputs that allow policymakers to monitor how the relative importance of risk factors evolves over time. This dynamic insight is essential for adaptive policy design, enabling institutions to adjust support measures as cohort characteristics, institutional structures, or learning environments change. 3. BRIEF PRESENTATION OF THE WORK PROGRAMME AND TRAINING: 1. Contextualisation of the education landscape in the European Union ; 2. Literature review, as thorough as possible; 3. Identification of the knowledge gap that the dissertation aims to cover ; 4. Collection and processing of data relevant to the problema; 5. Methodology implementation; 6. Analysis of the results; 7. Discussion of the results ; 8. Write the report about the work developed 4. REQUIRED PROFILE: Admission requirements: Bachelor Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management or similar Engineering. The awarding of the fellowship is dependent on the applicants' enrolment in study cycle or non-award courses of Higher Education Institutions. Preference factors: Good knowledge of the English language. The letter of motivation must be written in English to allow the assessment of the candidate’s English proficiency and motivation. Minimum requirements: Average grade of 18 in the Master Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management. 5. EVALUATION OF APPLICATIONS AND SELECTION PROCESS: Selection criteria and corresponding valuation: the first phase comprises the Academic Evaluation (AC), based on the criteria referred to in Article 12 of the Regulations for Grants of INESC TEC, while the second phase comprehends the Individual Interview (EI). All factors are evaluated on a scale of 0 to 100, taking into account the applicants' merit, suitability and conformity with the preference factors. The weight of the AC factors are as follows: Academic Qualifications (FA, 30), Scientific Publications (PC, 20), Experience (EX, 20) and Motivation Letter (CM, 30).
