Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow in Machine Learning Discovery of Flow Reactor or Microreactor Designs Job reference: 10118659230 Hours: Full time Contract Type: Fixed term, 24 months extendable up to (total) 48 months Closing: 07/09/2026 (23:59 Lisbon/London time) Salary (gross, per annum, approx.): €32,679 (junior) / €49,018 (senior) About the role REACTORS 5.0 funded by the European Research Executive Agency and led by ERA Chair holder Dr Nuno M. Reis, from the University of Bath, UK, aims to boost Excellence and Innovation in green and digital technologies by pioneering sustainable reactor and microreactor technologies based on nature’s ‘first principles’. REACTORS 5.0 will be centred on Excellence in design, modelling, and machine learning for advancing reactor and microreactor innovations tuned to unmet needs in clinical, environmental, and food sectors. The focus of the team will be on high-quality research and impactful innovations, including dissemination of outcomes and success in research income to enable collaborative, international developments with global impact. You will be responsible for developing and implementing Machine Learning algorithms to support the design, experimental validation and application of novel sustainable reactor or microreactor designs, in partnership with other members of the team and a range of internal and external collaborators. The purpose of this role is to: developing and implementing Machine Learning algorithms for reaction engineering, aligned with specific industrial needs and key outcomes/impacts identified in Horizon Europe's funding landscape support the design and experimental validation of novel sustainable reactor and microreactor/microfluidic designs developed machine learning interfaces with experimental state-of-the-art techniques and/or numerical Multiphysics simulation tools being developed within the team explore opportunities for using Machine Learning to boost design and integration of e.g. advanced materials, biological molecules, or cells in sustainable reactor or microreactor designs, to deliver green manufacturing solutions or new digital tools, in collaboration with other research teams assist with dissemination of project results and organisation of innovation and co-design events, with internal and external collaborators interact with a number of local, national, and international stakeholders, exploring opportunities for joint competitive funding bids make use of installed 'state of the art' infrastructure within UMinho and the region, in particular advanced Deucalion EuroHPC supercomputer, for boosting use of Artificial Intelligence to reaction engineering. About you: Our ideal candidate will have: previous experience in developing and applying Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to flow systems (macro-scale or microscale) background in reaction engineering and/or proven track record of implementing 'first principles' of reaction engineering to advance technological development experimental hands-on and ability to validate ML predictions with experimental data a strong and world-class background in design or modelling of chemical or biological reactors applied to emergent fields deep understanding of interaction between 'first principles' (mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and/or reaction or bioreaction kinetics) and design or sustainable and intensified reactors excellent communication skills to disseminate research findings to a range of audiences, including subject experts, commercial collaborators and members of the public ability to develop a research vision and pursue a world-leading specific research question/hypothesis strong time management and teamworking skills experience in supervising or co-supervising postgraduate and undergraduate students experience in contributing or leading the development and submission of visionary funding applications in the area of the post strong ethics and int
