ONE (1) research grant for students with MSC degree with reference number BI|2026/938under the scope of the Project TRACI - On phylogenetic trees and networks representation and comparison – Refª 2023.17447.ICDT / LISBOA2030-FEDER-00866000, funded by national funds through FCT, I.P., , is now available under the following conditions: OBJECTIVES | FUNCTIONS This scholarship supports research on the design and analysis of algorithms for NP-Hard problems in phylogenetics, with a focus on metrics that compare phylogenetic trees. The central objective is to develop new approximation and fixed-parameter algorithms — together with any accompanying hardness results — for the Subtree Pruning and Regrafting (SPR) and Tree Bisection and Reconnection (TBR) distances, building on the theory of maximum agreement forests, the combinatorial structure that underlies both metrics. The work combines a theoretical component, aimed at improving the best known approximation guarantees (in particular closing the gap between the rooted and unrooted settings) and understanding their limits, with an experimental component, aimed at implementing these algorithms, benchmarking them against exact methods on real and simulated data, and identifying families of inputs that are easier to solve in practice. The successful candidate will contribute to publishable results in algorithms and combinatorics and lay the groundwork for a subsequent PhD proposal.
